Kai Kristiansen was born in 1929 and from an early age trained as a cabinet-maker until finishing his apprenticeship in 1948. Two years later he was accepted into the Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen where he studied furniture design under the legendary Danish master Kaare Klint and continued to work under Klint until opening his own private design workshop in 1955.
Early on he established a long-term relationship with the manufacturer Schou Andersen Møbelfabrik, with one of his earliest collaborations with them being his most famous and also most copied design – the iconic Model #42 dining chair, noted for its elegant simplicity, lightness of appearance, and the comfort provided by the seemingly “built-in” armrests which ingeniously connect the back support to the rear legs.
A couple of other popular designs by Kai Kristiansen include the Model #121 “paper knife” lounge chair & sofa series for Magnus Olesen and also the modular FM shelving-system manufactured by Feldballes.
Kristiansen would go on to work with many of the other top names in the Danish furniture industry, including Fritz Hansen and Axel Kjærsgaard. His broad appeal and reputation allowed him to gain additional international recognition as the organizer & driving force behind the popular Scandinavian Furniture Fair throughout the 1960’s.
